The 1X home outsider strategy means backing a home team that the bookmaker prices as an underdog, on the Double Chance “1X” market. “1” is a home win and “X” is a draw. The bet wins if the home team wins or the match ends level, and loses only if the away team wins.

The appeal is simple: you win in two of the three possible results instead of one. The price you get reflects exactly that, and the maths below shows what that means in practice.

What the price already includes

A Double Chance price is not a home-win price plus a free draw. It is a single price for the combined outcome, and like every price it carries the bookmaker’s margin.

Worked example. Suppose a home underdog is offered at 2.50 to win outright and 1.45 on 1X. A £10 bet on 1X at 1.45 returns £14.50 if the home team wins or the match is drawn: a profit of £4.50. If the away team wins, the full £10 stake is lost.

Notice the shape of that. You win in two of three results, but the profit on a win (£4.50) is smaller than the loss on the one bad result (£10). The extra safety has already been paid for in the price.

Why people use it

The logic is that home teams win or draw more often than the away price alone suggests, especially in leagues where home advantage is strong. That pattern is often true in aggregate. It is not a guarantee for any single match.

A strong away side can still win 1-0 at a weak home ground. Injuries, red cards, weather and a single poor day all decide games. “More likely to win or draw” is a probability, not a certainty, and a low price never removes the loss risk.

When a 1X price is worth considering

  • The home team concedes few at home – check their recent home record, not just their reputation.
  • The away side has squad problems or heavy fixture congestion.
  • The two teams are closer in strength than the price gap between 1 and the away win suggests.
  • You can explain in one sentence why the away win looks overpriced. If you cannot, the “safety” of 1X is mostly margin in disguise.

The risks

  • You lose 100% of the stake if the away team wins. No partial result saves the bet.
  • The shorter price means wins are small. One away win erases several small 1X profits.
  • Accumulators of 1X legs look safe and are not. If each leg wins about 70% of the time, a four-fold wins only 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 × 0.7 ≈ 24% of the time. It loses roughly 76% of the time.

Staking

Stake the same small amount on each 1X bet. Increasing stakes after a loss to win money back does not improve the mathematics: every bet still carries the bookmaker’s margin, and a bigger stake only makes the eventual away win cost more. A stop point – a number of bets or a loss limit – should be decided before the first wager, not after the first loss.

Verdict

1X on a home underdog is a lower-risk way to back a home team, not a dependable way to make money. It wins more often than a straight home win, but the price is shorter and a single away win still costs the full stake. If you use it, use small flat stakes, a pre-set stop point, and only matches you can explain rationally.
